i'm too tired to reply to messages atm so i'll do that tomorrow!

here's a random tutorial thing
*note this is mainly for semi-realistic drawings. cartoon-y styles often bend what's said in the tut*

aaah idek if this will be helpful
but if it was then tell me what i should make tips for next!

This is very helpful! I have one question about shading though :0
How do you decide what colors to blend over your drawing? I've heard use darker tints of the existing flat color, I've heard use the opposite of the tint of the existing flat color, and ive heard just black?
What looks best for semi-realistic?

if you have Tumblr,I can send you a post that really helps with picking up the shades for your flat colours, but here's the essential:

rule 1: DO NOT SHADE WITH BLACK. EVER. IT NEVER LOOKS GOOD.

  • red- shade with a slightly darker shade of purple
  • orange- slightly darker and more saturated shade of red
  • yellow- i think like..a peach could work but make it a really light peach
  • green- shade with darker and less saturated shade of blue or teal
  • blue- shade with purple
  • purple- a shade thats darker than the purple you’re using and maybe a little pink (MAYBE blue)
  • pink- darker shade of red
  • white- a really light lavender or blue..or i guess any really light colour??
  • black- okay listen dont use pure black to colour anything unless you want to leave it with flat colours because you cant really shade black lol
  • grey- a slightly darker shade of purple or blue (less saturated)
  • brown- slightly darker and less saturated shade of purple or red

Sorry, i'm not cakeindafridge, but i have an answer if you are willing to hear it!
For realistic things, you should almost NEVER use black xD or only use black if it is literally in the absolute most darkest areas.
Black makes drawings look hecking flat.
Instead, use a color that relates to the mood or feeling of the drawing.
For example,
Sad drawing, use sad colors like blues and purples
Happy drawings? Greens and maybe even yellows but thats more for lighting
ANgry, Reds and some blues.

But try your best to never or very rarley use black and white when shading or lighitng.
for lighting also pay attention to the mood, but i suggest yellows, pinks, and bright blues for that c:

this is ver yhelpful indeed. I think I do all of those things for quite a while now, just I feel I have to experiment a bit mor ein the headshape henc eI think my muzzles have too straight lines. soemtimes u just stick to what you´re used to and dont really think abotu experimenting. like many people, in past I realyl sticked to the sideview, i still do a lot because of character sheets, but I also do a lot of half profiles by now, althought its quite hard for me to place the snouts right in every perspective and whatever I looked at didnt seem to help me much

To each their own, but I actually disagree slightly about the straight lines. Of course you don't want them all strait, but they don't all need t be curved, either. Contrast is key, and it really helps to simplify forms. I personally love a strait-curved-strait pattern in line art.

yep each to their own !
personally i find straight lines very unrealistic (excluding architecture), since very few things in real life are actually completely straight, in animals especially
