---------
this is not aimed at anyone in particular

okay so this is a lot different to the other journal i just posted but i feel this needs to be addressed

again this is not targeted at anyone specifically

recently i've found a lot of people who are either copying my style, characters or just art in general
and i mean this is fine to a point, i'm really happy that i inspire other people!
but there is a point when you cross the line

i think most of this will apply to many other artists as well
and basically to sum everything up that i'm gonna say:

it hurts you more than it hurts me

i'll try to break this up so it's easier to follow

THIS IS WHAT I'M OKAY WITH:

i don't mind people taking inspiration from my art and characters to improve on anatomy and whatnot
hell, i don't mind if you even trace my art as long as it's never uploaded or claimed as your own or sold etc. (however i really recommend you do not do it to excess)
i realise this helps to get an understanding of anatomy and how an artist draws certain things, but it does actually stop you from learning independently
i highly recommend you reference from actual photos instead, that way you're not only working off real anatomy but you're able to develop your own style in the process!

WHEN DOES IT BECOME TOO MUCH?
bits and pieces of my art and characters being taken is fine (this will however vary from artist to artist), but when your art and characters begin to actually resemble the artist that inspired them, then u gotta step back
you do not want to go down this path oKAY?? OKAY

"THE ARTIST HASN'T TOLD ME OFF, SO THEY MUSTN'T KNOW OR CARE RIGHT?"

i'm putting this out there right now:
an artist can tell when their art or character has been copied

they may not have told you off about it, yes, but trust me it is extremely likely they've noticed it being linked to their own art
you really can't get away with it
if you steal someone's baby and claim it as your own i'm sure the mama would realise okay?? 8D

"BUT HOW DOES IT HURT ME MORE?"
YES OKAY so that might be going great for you, closely copying a 'popular' artists style has gotten you more attention right? that's what you want yeah?
WELL I MEAN THAT'S GREAT YOU'RE MORE RECOGNISED AND ALL BUT
when you start getting more attention, more people see your art, which means a higher chance of someone calling you out on copying said artists style
it's likely you'll probably lose respect among other artists
but wait!! maybe you traced art for a long time, and now you've stopped that and have been creating your own art for a while
SAD NEWS IS your current style will still resemble said artists' style that you copied all that time ago
and now people will constantly be comparing you to that artist
great? no, because it's likely going to be negative comparisons

"BUT THEY SHOULD BE HONOURED THEIR ART IS ADMIRED SO MUCH SOMEONE WANTS TO BE LIKE THEM"

noononono
it is an honour that people like your art, and in a way nice i guess that people want to be like you
but when an artist specifically states clearly that you are not allowed to either copy their art or characters, it is expected that you respect that
if you don't follow the rules an artist has set with their art, then it is a clearly disrespectful act to go and copy their hard work
not only will this likely make them think less of you, but you will probably ruin your chances of ever being friends with them as well

"BUT MY ART'S SO CRAP, I'LL NEVER IMPROVE ///CRY"

I'M REALLY TIRED OF HEARING PEOPLE SAY "I CAN'T DRAW" ????
your idols and inspirations wouldn't have gotten to the level they are now without putting in heaps of effort
and let me tell you, the practice most likely did not come from copying other people's work
tutorials are there to help you- theres heaps of them out there
and if that fails? then you can always directly ask another artist
i'm always open to helping other people!! yes i'll be slow at responding, but i promise to try my best to give useful feedback to those that ask
AND IF THAT FAILS??
THEN ALL YOU CAN DO IS PRACTICE
just practice
lots
and lots
of practice
8D
u dont become a master in a day

/EDIT GONNA ADD THIS AS WELL
to all the people who obviously copy other another artist style and claim that it's your own
pls stop lying to yourself :"D
it's not yours, and i recommend you alter it at least slightly so it's not a blatant copy of the other

i've found maybe 5 people the past month tracing my art and/or creating almost literal replicas of my characters
and honestly i haven't noted most of them about it because i live in hope that it's just an off thing, and that they'll stop in time
but if this continues then i'm gonna be sending out some angry notes bc my art and characters are the only thing i'm proud of in my life :^)
please respect that

you people know who you are
and i'm giving you a chance to stop before it actually ruins your own reputation and future for art

no one likes a copycat unu

i don't want to start any arguments - this is just my view of this subject

it's fine if you have a different opinion, but this is how i treat my art, and how you treat yours is your own business
i'm not looking to start fights

I agree with every sentence, word, letter written here
I must admit I used to have a bit TOO much inspiration from certain artists when I was smoll, but they actually came trough and told me off (or their friend did) and stuff changed quite rapidly from there.

Now I think
At least HOPE that I've got my own style xD

My point is
There's always hopes. Even tough that was a rough time, I'm on good terms with this artist today.

Stop before it goes too far, or you'll regret it a lot
